Ale is the house naturalist. Birds above all: pigeons, sparrows, owls, a blue heron with a fish in its beak, drawn with the patience of a field illustrator, alongside lilies, magnolias, and lily of the valley in crisp single-needle line. She works color too, and when she does it glows: a sturgeon in full blue, a speckled trout, a ladybug on a stem.
